Tagging people or companies on LinkedIn can be a great way of expanding your network and increasing your profile’s visibility. But sometimes, you can’t tag certain profiles, and you need to make sure you’re tagging the right ones so you can avoid creating irrelevant and inaccurate posts.

As a LinkedIn marketing agency, we know all the ins and outs of LinkedIn and its many features. In our blog below, we’ll discuss exactly how to tag a company on LinkedIn, the benefits of doing so, and reasons why you might not be able to tag certain people on LinkedIn…

How to tag a company on LinkedIn

You might want to tag a person/company on your LinkedIn posts, maybe to recommend them or through a collaborative piece of content. To do so, follow the below steps:

Step 1 – Go to the post/write your post

First of all, go to the post where you want to tag the company/person. To start a post, visit your LinkedIn feed and scroll to the top of the page, there it says ‘start a post’, see below:

Write your post out as you normally would, feel free to include pictures, polls, hashtags, or whatever other elements you were planning on utilising.

Step 2 – Press the @ button

Next, it’s time to tag the company/person. Figure out where in your LinkedIn post you want the tag to be and leave a space for it. Press the ‘@’ button, for example, ‘@:company’, and it will hopefully appear as an option to click on underneath, like this:

Once it appears, click the option and then the company name will appear in bold on your post, like this:

Step 3 – Check your post

Now you’ve tagged the person/company you want to tag, read over your post to check for any errors, and double-check the tag to ensure it is the right person/company. The last thing you want is for the wrong company to be tagged as it can make your post look silly!

It’s important to note that this process is the same on mobile, including IOS and Android.

What are the benefits of tagging a person or company on LinkedIn?

Tagging a person or company on LinkedIn can be beneficial for you to do for a number of reasons. Not only does it boost credibility in your content, but it also:

Increases discoverability

One reason why it’s beneficial to tag a person or a company in a post on LinkedIn is because it increases your own LinkedIn profile’s discoverability. This is because, when you tag a person on the platform – and they engage with the post by liking, commenting, or reposting, it increases the visibility of your post to their network as well as your own.

What’s more, posts where you mention others are more likely to receive engagement from them and their network, which is a positive in the eyes of LinkedIn’s algorithm. This is because the algorithm favours posts with higher engagement, so will naturally boost this type of content on users’ feeds.

Diversifies your network

Tagging a person or company on LinkedIn also helps to diversify and build your existing LinkedIn network. As mentioned, when you tag someone in a post of yours, their engagement with the post will expose your profile to their own network of connections.

This means you can potentially be put in front of people in a variety of different careers and industries, which is always helpful when it comes to reaching out to those providing different services to your own, but ones that could ultimately help your business.

Bolsters your professional reputation

Another benefit of tagging users on LinkedIn is that it can further bolster your professional reputation. For example, if you have worked in collaboration with another company, tagging them on LinkedIn will show your ability to work with other businesses.

This could encourage other businesses to reach out to you for prospective collaborations, or even to use your products/services.

When are you unable to tag a person or company on LinkedIn?

Whilst being able to tag a company/person on LinkedIn can be beneficial, there are times when you might be unable to do so. For example:

Privacy settings

One reason you might not be able to tag a person/company on LinkedIn is because of their privacy settings. For example, they might have the ‘allow mentions’ switch under their visibility settings turned off, which can mean other users are unable to tag them.

Connection status

You might also not be able to tag a user because of their current connection status. For example, if you are not connected with them you will be unable to tag them. To ensure you can tag them, request a connection where possible.

Profile/company settings

Finally, you might also be unable to tag someone because of their profile/company page settings. For example, this might be the case if the person does not have an active profile (in other words, they don’t use their account), or if someone has blocked you.
